In 1768 he was forced to leave the state, on account of the persecutions which were inflicted upon the Baptists. He went to South- western Pennsylvania, and assisted in establishing churches in that region. The [[Goshen]] [[Church]] in [[Green]] County called him to be its pastor in 1775.
