He received his preparatory education at Oneida Institute and at Oberlin, and graduated from Oberlin Theological Seminary in 1838. In 1839 he was ordained an evangelist at Oberlin, and labored as such for some years. He was acting pastor at West Tisbury, Massachusetts, from 1851 to 1855; at Weymouth, Ohio, from 1855 to 1861; West Gloucester, Mass., from 1861 to 1867; at Saybrook, Ohio, from 1867 to 1871; at Randolph, from 1872 to 1876.
