He was ordained December 28, 1715, pastor of the First [[Church]] in the precinct of [[Salem]] and Beverly (now North Beverly); and in May 1, 1771, [[Reverend]] Enos Hitchcock was chosen his associate. He died March 23, 1775. Mr. Chipman was held in high esteem among his clerical brethren, and was a good representative of the orthodox ministers of [[Massachusetts]] in his day.
