It is found in the same position in the liturgies of St. James, St. Basil, St. Chrysostom, and St. Mark. Its object is described as being to excite the minds of the faithful to a devout attention to the mysteries about to be celebrated. While it is sung the priest says secretly a prayer called the prayer of the cherubic hymn.
