He soon began to preach; in 1841 was a student in the Hoxton Theological Institution; in 1842 was in the Irish itinerancy, and labored successfully for some years as a traveling preacher. He conceived the idea of forming a society for promoting systematic giving to the cause of God, and the Irish Conference consented to his devoting all his time and energies to the working out if that idea. The Systematic Beneficence Society aid then the Christian League were the result. He traveled over England, Ireland, the Continent, and in America to advocate his plans.
