<p> a Presbyterian minister, was born in Fifeshire, Scotland, in 1770. He was distinguished for his scholarship while connected with the [[Edinburgh]] College, especially in the department of [[Grecian]] literature. On the recommendation of Dr. Robertson and Dr. Blair he was called to take charge of the Presbyterian [[Church]] in Charleston, S. C. He entered upon the duties of his office in June, 1793, and subsequently received an appointment as principal of the [[Charleston]] College. He died in the midst of his usefulness, Aug. 31, 1808. As a preacher he enjoyed a fine reputation. Among the productions of his pen were various articles prepared by him for the British Encyclopaedia, an abridgment of Hume's History of [[England]] for schools, a version of the Psalms, etc. Two volumes of his sermons were published in 1809.
