He was favored with tender religious. instruction; professed conversion at the age of eighteen; received a thorough mental culture at [[Lincoln]] [[Academy]] and at Waterville College; began preaching in 1854, and in 1855 was admitted into the East [[Maine]] Conference, in which. he served as health permitted until 1862, when he joined the 12th Maine Regiment as chaplain.
