At the Ecole Normale he adopted the views of Cousin, and in 1816 was called to the chair of philosophy in the University of Strasburg. In 1828 he took orders, and resigned his chair in the university. He still remained at Strasburg, however, for a number of years delivering lectures; and in 1849 he set out for [[Paris]] as vicar of the diocese. In 1853 he was made professor of moral theology at Paris, and held that post until his death, Oct. 18, 1867. In philosophy he was a scholastic of the Anselmic school, but in theology he showed Hegelian tendencies.
