He became an orphan at the age of eleven, experienced religion in 1858, received license to preach in 1859, and in 1863 graduated from the [[Illinois]] Wesleyan University. He served as supply in the Central Illinois and Illinois Conferences in 1864, and in 1866 joined the Illinois Conference, in which, through excessive labor and exposure, he brought upon himself disease of the lungs, of which he died, July 17, 1867. As a student Mr. Baumann was earnest, manly, and persevering; as a pastor methodical, faithful, laborious, and successful; as a [[Christian]] pure.
