a Protestant theologian of Germany, was born Feb. 6, 1803, at Gusten, in Anhalt-Cothen. He received his early education at the gymnasium in Bernburg, and in 1823 he entered the missionary institution of father Jainicke at Berlin. He then studied at Halle and Berlin, and for some years labored among the Jews in connection with the London Society for Promoting Christianity among the Jews.
