Richard Allen [1]
first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in 1760. After 17 years' service in the Methodist ministry, to which he had been ordained by Bishop Asbury, he was elected bishop of the newly-formed "African Methodist Episcopal Church" (q.v.) in 1816.
