In 1837 he became pastor of the Presbyterian Church at New Rochelle, N. Y.; in 1841 he became travelling agent for the American Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge; in 1843 he organized the [[Abbot]] Collegiate Institute for young ladies, in New York, which was afterwards called the Spingler Institute. He retired from public life in 1866, and died July 31, 1874. Gorham Dummer Abbot [1]
LLD., an American minister, teacher, and writer, was born at Brunswick, Me., Sept. 3, 1807. He graduated at Bowdoin College in 1826; and, after taking part of the theological course at Andover, he made the tour of the United States and several visits to Europe, in order to study the various systems of public education. In 1837 he became pastor of the Presbyterian Church at New Rochelle, N. Y.; in 1841 he became travelling agent for the American Society for the Diffusion of Useful Knowledge; in 1843 he organized the Abbot Collegiate Institute for young ladies, in New York, which was afterwards called the Spingler Institute.
