<p> (Hebrews A bronah', עִבְרוֹנָה, passage, i.e., — of the sea; Sept. Ε᾿βρεναί), the thirtieth station of the [[Israelites]] on their way from [[Egypt]] to [[Canaan]] (Numbers 33:34-35). Since it lay near [[Ezion-Gaber]] on the west, as they left Jotbathah, it was probably in the plain now known as the Ka'a en-Nikb, immediately opposite the pass of the same name at the head of the Elanitic branch of the [[Red]] [[Sea]] (see Robinson's [[Map]] in Researches, volume 1). Rommel (in the Hall. Encyklop. 1:167) compares the Avara of [[Ptolemy]] (Numbers 33:17), in [[Arabia]] Petraea (66 degrees 10 feet and 29 degrees 40 feet), with the Havarra of the Peutinger Table; a very improbable supposition. Knobel thinks (Exeg. Handb. in loc.) that the Ezion-Gaber in question cannot be the port of that name at the head of the Elanitic Gulf; for, as the next station mentioned is Kadesh, this was too far from the north end of the gulf to be reached in one march; but this objection is of little force, as there is no uniformity in the 'intervals between the stations. Schwarz (Palest. page 219) rightly regards [[Ebronah]] as merely the name of a "ferry," by which the people perhaps crossed this arm of the sea (!), or where travelers usually crossed it. </p> | |||
