<p> an English prelate, was the soul and heir of baron [[Gilbert]] Basset. In 1225 he was made provost of the collegiate Church of St. John of Beverley, andt in 1230 dean of York. In 1241 he was elected bishop of London, and in 1244 was transferred to the see of Canterbury. In 1250 he began a comtroversy with archbishop Boniface, respecting the privileges of the see, but was overruled by the pope; in 1255, however, he succeeded in opposing the extortions of Rustand, the pope's legate. He built the church of St. Faith, near St. Paul's, and died of the plague in 1259. </p>
