<p> a noted educator and minister of the [[Methodist]] Episcopal Church, was born in [[Warren]] County, N. J., in 1829, and educated at Dickinson College (class of 1850); was junior preacher on [[Carlisle]] [[Circuit]] in 1851; was the following year appointed to [[Lock]] [[Haven]] Circuit, where a bronchial affection developed itself, which compelled him to locate in 1854. In this same year he was appointed professor of a high literary institution in [[Washington]] City, where he remained until 1856, when he accepted the presidency of the newly-founded Irving [[Female]] College, and to this institution he devoted his energy and talents until Jan. 2,1865, when he "fell asleep in Jesus." "The personal character of our brother may be included in the comprehensive title '''''‘''''' a [[Christian]] gentleman,' the highest style and type of manhood. As a gentleman, a scholar, and a minister of truth, his was a noble candor.... In everything that bore upon truth or purity he was a decided man.
