A Hamite tribe related to the Hittites and Amorites. Sons of Canaan ( Genesis 10:18). The targums identify with Emesa, now Hums . Bochart conjectures Samyra , a city of Phoenicia, on the sea coast, on the river Eleutherus ; its ruins still are called Samra. (See Zemaraim ).
