<p> a Congregational minister, was born at Danvers, Massachusetts, November 24, 1786. He entered Harvard [[College]] in 1805, but left in his sophomore year, and graduated from Dartmouth in 1809. He began the study of law; in 1811 united with the [[Church]] in Salem, and not long afterwards began the study of theology, graduating from [[Andover]] Theological Seminary in 1814. In October of that year he preached at Brookfield and in various other places, and in January 1815, accepted a call to the First Church in Portsmouth, N.H. Some time after he engaged in a controversy on Unitarianism, with Dr. [[Nathan]] Parker, pastor of the South [[Parish]] Church in Portsmouth. In October 1835, he was installed pastor of the Old [[Pilgrim]] Church, Middleborough, Massachusetts, and continued in that relation until his death, May 3, 1868. See Cong.
