At the age of fifteen he went to India. and passed three years among the coffee plantations of his relatives; then returned to England, and studied at [[Nottingham]] and at [[Cheshunt]] [[College]] in 1874 he supplied the pulpit at Chertsey, Surrey, the next year. became the settled pastor, and pastor at East Dereham, Norfolk, in August, 1878.
