<p> <strong> AMARIAH </strong> (‘J″ [Note: Jahweh.] said’ or ‘promised’). <strong> 1 </strong> .&nbsp; Zephaniah 1:1 , great-grandfather of the prophet Zephaniah, and son of a [[Hezekiah]] who may be the king. This is the only instance of the name that is certainly pre-exilic. <strong> 2 </strong> . 1Ch 6:7; &nbsp; 1 Chronicles 6:52 , grandfather of [[Zadok]] the priest. <strong> 3 </strong> . 1Ch 23:19; &nbsp; 1 Chronicles 24:23 , a [[Levite]] in David’s time. <strong> 4 </strong> . &nbsp; 1 Chronicles 6:11 , &nbsp; Ezra 7:3 ( <strong> [[Amarias]] </strong> , &nbsp; Esther 8:2 &nbsp;Esther 8:2 , 2E&nbsp; Esther 1:2 ), son of Azariah, who is said to have ministered in Solomon’s temple. The lists in which <strong> 2 </strong> and <strong> 4 </strong> occur are very uncertain, and the name may refer to the same person in both. <strong> 5 </strong> . &nbsp; 2 Chronicles 19:11 , a high priest in the reign of Jehoshaphat. <strong> 6 </strong> . &nbsp; 2 Chronicles 31:16 , a Levite, a gate-porter, in Hezekiah’s time. <strong> 7 </strong> . &nbsp; Nehemiah 12:2; &nbsp; Nehemiah 12:18; &nbsp; Nehemiah 10:3 , a priestly clan which returned to Jerusalem, and sealed the covenant under Nehemiah (probably the same as <strong> [[Immer]] </strong> , &nbsp; 1 Chronicles 24:14 , &nbsp; Ezra 2:37; &nbsp; Ezra 10:20 , &nbsp; Nehemiah 7:40 <strong> [Meruth </strong> , 1Es 5:24 ]). <strong> 8 </strong> . &nbsp; Ezra 10:42 , a Judahite, one of the sons of [[Bani]] (&nbsp; Ezra 10:34 , cf. &nbsp; 1 Chronicles 9:4 ) who had taken strange wives. <strong> 9 </strong> . &nbsp; Nehemiah 11:4 , a Judahite who offered to dwell in Jerusalem. <strong> 10 </strong> . &nbsp; Nehemiah 12:12 , where <strong> [[Meraiah]] </strong> is probably a corruption of [[Amariah]] (which is found in Syr. and Luc.). </p> <p> A. (3) A L evite in the line of Aaron-Eleazar; a son of Azariah who "executed the priest's office in the house that [[Solomon]] built" (&nbsp;1 Chronicles 6:10 f). Possibly identical with Amariah, number (3). (5) A descendant of Judah in the line of [[Perez]] and an ancestor of Ataiah who lived in Jerusalem after the [[Babylonian]] exile (&nbsp;Nehemiah 11:4 ). Compare [[Imri]] (&nbsp;1 Chronicles 9:4 ) and number (7) of this article, which Amariah seems to be of the same family, (6) A L evite and an assistant of [[Kore]] who was appointed by Hezekiah to distributed the "oblations of Yahweh" to their brethren (&nbsp;2 Chronicles 31:15 ). (7) A son of Bani who had married a foreign woman (&nbsp;Ezra 10:42 ). See number (5) of this article (8) A priest who with Nehemiah sealed the covenant (&nbsp;Nehemiah 10:3 ); he had returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel (&nbsp;Nehemiah 12:2 ) and was the father of Jehohanan (compare Hanani, &nbsp;Ezra 10:20 ), priest at the time of [[Joiakim]] (&nbsp;Nehemiah 12:13 ).
