<p> <b> JARED. </b> —Father of Enoch, named in our Lord’s genealogy (Luke 3:37). </p>

<p> [[Son]] of Mahalaleel, a descendant of Seth. [[Genesis]] 5:15-20; Luke 3:37 . Called JERED in 1 Chronicles 1:2 . </p>

<p> Ja'red. (descent). One of the antediluvian patriarchs, and father of Enoch, [[Genesis]] 5:15-16; Genesis 5:18-20; Luke 3:37. In the lists of Chronicles, the name is given, in the Authorized Version, as Jered. See [[Jered]]. </p>

<p> ''''' jā´red ''''' ( ירד , <i> ''''' yeredh ''''' </i> , "descent"; pausal form, ירד , <i> ''''' yāredh ''''' </i> , in [[Genesis]] 5:15; 1 Chronicles 1:2 , hence, English [[Versions]] of the [[Bible]] "Jared" for "Jered"; Ἰαρέδ , <i> '''''Iaréd''''' </i> ): In Genesis 5:15-20; 1 Chronicles 1:2; Luke 3:37 , son of [[Mahalaleel]] and father of Enoch. The King James Version has "Jered" in 1 Chronicles 1:2 . </p> <p> The name is supposed by Budde to denote a degeneration of the human race, the first five generations being righteous, their successors not, except [[Enoch]] and Noah. The name has been identified with that of [[Irad]] ( עירד , <i> ''''' ‛ı̄rādh ''''' </i> ), Genesis 4:18 . See Skinner, Gen, 117, 129, 131. </p>

<p> (Heb. Ye'red, יֶרֶד, in pause Ya'red. י רֶד, descender; Sept. Ι᾿άρεδ, N.T. Ι᾿αρέδ , [[Josephus]] Ι᾿αρέδης), the name of two men. </p> <p> 1. The fourth antediluvian patriarch in descent from Seth, son of [[Mahalaleel]] and father of Enoch; born B.C. 3712, died B.C. 2750, aged 962 years; 162 years old at the birth of his heir (Genesis 5, 15-20; 1 Chronicles 1, 2, "Jered;" Luke 3:37). </p> <p> 2. A son apparently of Ezra, of the tribe of Judah, by his wife Jehudijah, although in the latter part of the same verse' a different parentage is spoken of; he is named as the "father" (i.e. founder) of [[Gedor]] (1 Chronicles 4:18, where the name is Anglicized "Jered"). B.C. cir. 1612. The Rabbins, however, give an allegorical interpretation to the passage, and treat this and other names therein as titles of Moses-Jered because he caused the manna to descend. </p>
