The rabbins assert that the father of Isaiah was also a prophet, according to a rule among them, that when the father of a prophet is called in [[Scripture]] by his name it is an indication that he also had the gift of prophecy (Clem. Alex. Stromat. 1). [[Augustine]] conjectured (De Civit. Dei, 18, 27) that the prophet Amos was the father of Isaiah; but the names of these two persons are written differently. Besides, the father of Isaiah, as well as Isaiah himself, was of Jerusalem. Some are of opinion that this [[Amoz]] was the man of God who spoke to King Amaziah, and obliged him to send back the hundred thousand men of Israel, whom he had purchased to march against the [[Edomites]] (&nbsp;2 Chronicles 25:7-8); but this opinion is supported by no proofs. </p>
