In 742 he assembled a council at some place (name unknown) in Germany, founded the celebrated monastery of Fulda, endowed other religious houses, and finally resigned his kingdom, and became a monk in a convent which he had built in honor of St. Silvester, on Mount Soracte, near Rome.
