<p> a French theologian and miscellaneous writer, nephew of [[Philip]] of Bec, was born about 1540. On his return to [[France]] from a journey in the East, he took part in the civil wars which were so numerous at this epoch, and was wounded in 1577 under the walls of Issoire. Authorized by the king to withdraw from the service, he was provided for at the abbey of Mortimer; became bishop of St. Malo in 1599, and counsellor of the crown.
